The first season follows two Louisiana homicide detectives, Rustin 'Rust' Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin 'Marty' Hart (Woody Harrelson), as they hunt for a serial killer over a 17-year period. Career criminal and the dead man's business partner Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) discovers that over $5 million he gave to Caspere has been embezzled, money with which he was planning to invest in a rail deal in order to set him and his wife Jordan (Kelly Reilly) on the straight and narrow. Hoping to get his money back, Frank begins his own investigation into the murder. Each of the characters also has to deal with problems in their personal lives.
